Masks, why masks?

We all wear them whether we realize it or not. Some people speak of them as the many hats they wear. Some masks are worn to protect such as a catcher's mask in baseball or the mask one would wear while fencing. Others are worn for dramatic affect or to pretend to be something we are not on the stage or for holidays like Halloween. Masquerade Balls can be great fun because of the slight anonymity it adds and yet a bit spooky in not always being certain of whom one is dancing with if they don't take off the mask. And a Clown paints a mask of makeup on to show the persona they take on while in clown makeup, much as the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence do when in nun drag.

But what of the masks we wear on a daily basis. The persona we present to the world. How authentic are we and is there integrity between what we are on the inner self and what we present to the world? Is it being more real to put on a suit and tie, or to take it off when you get home? Or are they aspects of the whole? I have been facinated with such things for some time and truly appreciated learning about Carl Jung in Psychology class. (more on Jung's views: http://www.iloveulove.com/psychology/jung/jungarchetypes.htm) All of these things inspired me to begin creating art masks.

Gender Masquerade

My first series of art masks. I pondered whether to simply include them in my collage section since they are each done in my basic collage style. But I have so many other mask series planned that I felt Masks deserved a page of their own. I will post pictures here of some of the masks in my Gender Masquerade series. Some of the archetypes explored with Gender Masquerade 1-30 are Daddy, boy, girl, Leatherman, Mama, man, Gentleman, Femme, Jester, and obviously there are many more.

The Gender Masquerade series asks people to involve themself with the art. To look at it and see if they can find themselves, or a piece of themselves. See if it challenges them, or inspires them. To look through the eyes of the mask and feel what it might be like to be the archetype it describes. And however these things affects the viewer and/or participant, I invite you all to look upon Gender Masquerade as a chance for insight whether into oneself, others, or both.

The First Six Pieces of Gender Masquerade

The first was actually inspired by the fridge art I made for Father's Day and sent to my Dad, even tho it took on a life of it's own. It's basically every idea I didn't put into the father's Day card.

The second was inspired by Mama of http://www.mamasfamily.org as was "Love you More" found on the Collage page. These pictures suck but it gives you a general idea.

After finishing the Mama mask, I felt inspired to do a mask about the boys in Mama's family.

Thank you to the boys at GENDERS for becoming the first people to take my art home and make it their own!
